Music Video Research: Goodwin

Performance:

Performance music video can be a good way to demonstrate the energy that artist/band can create whilst performing and show that to the world. This type of music video can be beneficial if an artist or band may be on a low budget or perhaps is stuck for a music video idea.

For example my recent experience at V Festival gave me an insight into performance music videos. Stormzy performed at V Festival and told the crowd he wanted to film his music video whilst performing and have the crowd sing the chorus.

However that didn't go to plan as you can see by his tweet. Although I do know that is the footage had been released it would have made a fantastic music video and showed the atmosphere very well.

Adele's music video to "set fire to the rain" is a very good example of a performance music video as it is in the iconic Albert hall and shows the crowds reaction and also cuts to the beat so has a relationship between the music and the visuals, as it cuts and pans when the chorus comes and does close ups of the instruments.

Concept:

A concept music video can generally be about anything but will be unusual and keep the viewer drawn in.

Red hot Chili Peppers - californication is a good example as the concept links into a video game and links their animated characters to their real life presence and shows the advancement in technology and takes them to a surreal other world. For example flying around on a virtual game between sky scrapers.

Another concept music video which had a lot of controversial opinions was Kanye West - Famous. The video featured 12 wax figures of authentic celebrities who have impacted the artist or influenced him in some way.

The music video even got featured in many newspapers articles which have their opinion and outlook on the video.

Narrative:

Narrative music videos have a start, a middle and an end. An example that springs to mine instantly is Beyonce - If i were a Boy. The narrative of this music video illustrates Beyonce playing the stereo typical male in the relationship and is represented as being inconsiderate, then half way through the music video the roles are reversed.

This research has influenced my planning, as I would like to have a narrative music video to match the pop acoustic genre and tell a story using lots of visual to lyrics, however would also like to add a concept and add post modernism to the music video as it is getting increasingly popular.
